The Falcons are in much need of defensive line help. They recently released defensive end Ray Edwards as he immensely underperformed over the last two seasons. And if you remove John Abraham from the mix, no one on the Falcons has more than 3.5 sacks this season. So with the news that the Eagles have released Jason Babin, some might think the Falcons will be a front runner for his services. But should they?Babin is coming off a year in which he saw his best numbers. He accrued 18 sacks, 40 total tackles and three forced fumbles. If you add in his stats from the 2010 season, then he looks even better. In the 2010 campaign, Babin totalled 12.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and 58 total tackles. In these two seasons, Babin was clearly one of the best defensive forces in the league and any team would be crazy not to go after him. However, when you look at his career as a whole, he just does not add up to a great pickup. Prior to the 2010 season, the most sacks he had made was five. He has also been inconsistent with his playing time. In four of his nine seasons, Babin has played 12 or fewer games. The 2012 campaign saw Babin go on the decline a bit. In 11 games he has only sacked the quarterback 5.5 times. Now this could be contributed by the fact that the Eagles' defense in all is a total travesty. Nevertheless, he still has not performed anywhere near what he had in his previous two seasons. Now to answer the question. Should the Falcons attempt to sign Jason Babin in an attempt to improve their pass rush which is ranked 16th in the NFL? Even though his stats are not where they were from 2010-2011, he is still a better than what the Falcons currently have. And if they can get him at a reasonable price, I say go for it. He can not get much worse than Ray Edwards was this season.
