The Atlanta Falcons 2013 season is something that only the true fans can stand to watch. There have been so many problems this season that the opponents have exposed and coaches have failed to fix. The only thing to hope for is that these problems don’t stop the Falcons from getting a win against their division rivals the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-8) this Sunday at Raymond James Stadium at 1 PM ET on FOX.  Starting with the obvious…injuries. The Falcons have had nine so far this season and to add insult to injury WR Harry Douglas has been added to the injury report today with a knee injury and TE Tony Gonzalez has missed his second day of practice with a toe injury but head Coach Mike Smith said, “don’t count him out.” It seems like a bad omen, the Falcons just got LB Sean Weatherspoon back and just this week added veteran OL Sean Locklear (formerly a member of the New York Giants) to the mix and now this. On to the offensive side of the ball, Locklear’s add there will be some minor improvements to the offensive line. Locklear’s presence will matter but it won’t guarantee that Steven Jackson will run for 100 yards against the Buccaneers and that Matt Ryan won’t be the leading rusher again. The holes for the running backs just aren’t there and they can’t protect Matt Ryan from anybody and won’t allow him time to throw. No, he hasn’t been good these last few weeks but I can’t find a quarterback who would be doing swell in these conditions. The defense is also another sad, disappointing story. The defensive line hasn’t gotten pressure on anyone since day one and the Falcons haven’t faced many true pocket quarterbacks here that are known for not being too rattled up by a defense…yet. The only true quarterback was Tom Brady, and they didn’t manage to get to him once. If they put pressure on someone at least they would’ve contended better than they have recently. The secondary is in good hands though with Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford. William Moore is still a solid safety but Thomas DeCoud has truly slacked up compared to last year when he was one of the top safeties in the league. The coaches say they’ve noticed the problems that need to be fixed and haven’t done anything to solve them. The Falcons went from not scoring in the red zone to barely ever getting the red zone and most likely going three and out in at least five possessions. The Falcons especially when losing Harry Douglas and possibly Tony Gonzalez, now will have an even tougher chance of moving the ball down field and scoring. The Falcons will have to rely on Roddy White to make a huge impact on the field Sunday for them to even think about a win. Their options offensively will have to be open the way the team intended for them to be. But will that happen? It’s not for me to determine, but being a Falcons fan you have to be realistic and lower your expectations. Sorry, it’s the truth.
