Mike Smith & the Atlanta Falcons reject HBO's Hard Knocks for their organization. It was revealed today that the Atlanta Falcons declined the opportunity to appear on the hit HBO show ‘Hard Knocks.’ A source revealed that the Falcons team talked a lot about the oportunity, but in the end Thomas Dimitroff, Arthur Blanks & coach Mike Smith didn’t feel it would be best for the team. They want the teams focus to be on football and football only. You can’t really fault the Falcons organization for feeling this way. This is a team that has made it to the playoffs the past two seasons under Matt Ryan and have lost in the first round to the eventual Super Bowl champion. Even though the show does draw ratings and increase a teams national profile, it also comes with major risks. Some view going on the show as having the same outcome of the ‘Madden Curse.’ Atlanta Falcons have the potential to be a major contendor in the NFC, but there are major problems that need to be addressed. Maybe that is something they weren’t willing to show with the world just yet. Hard Knocks opens the flood gates for everyone to see what the team is doing and made of, hence why a lot of teams turn the show down. With the Falcons declining to be on the show, you can look for teams like the Jets to get the spotlight this season. I am sure that team is now the front runner for HBO. There probably won’t be a more entertaining training camp to see considering the Jets signed Tim Tebow during the off-season to be their 2nd QB. That will actually be better off considering that team has a history of imploding. This would be their 2nd go round for the show. With the Falcons not really having much to go with in the draft, it will be interesting to see how they handle this season. They have a new offensive and defensive coordinator and you have to hope they can elevate from this. It seems the Falcons are the one team every year that people say have the potential to go all the way, but can’t get over the 1st round playoff hump. Who knows, maybe being on Hard Knocks could have helped, but I guess we will never know.
