I have undoubtedly heaped a lot of praise on the Philadelphia Eagles recently. It’s actually very out of character for me, whether you realize it or not. Their solid offseason and organizational changes in philosophy are things that I have chronicled well for you.

There was only one thing that kept sticking in my crawl. The one weakness that the Eagles seemed to overlook this offseason, not necessarily through any fault of their own was the safety position. This team will go into the season with Kurt Coleman and Nate Allen as its starting safeties. They needed to do more.

Now they have.

The signing of Oshiomogho ”OJ” Atogwe will not go down on the list of all time Eagles signings, but it may be a key addition and could go along to shoring up the safety position for the Eagles.

Again, Atogwe sat out there unsigned this long in the offseason for a reason. This is not an earth shattering signing. But it is an acknowledgement by the Eagles that they needed help at the position.

Atogwe is 30, and spent last year with the Redskins and spent 6 seasons with the Rams. He will bring veteran depth to the position and may help push the younger Coleman and Allen along. Atogwe signed a 5 year deal with the Redskins last season, but was released in March because of an injury filled first season with the team.

Atogwe has shown playmaking ability in the past. The question is whether he still has that playmaking ability. Either way, Atogwe will be there for the Eagles if either of the younger safeties fails. Remember, both Coleman and Nate Allen lost their starting jobs last year at different points in the season.

Not earth shattering, but not bad.
