We’ve spent a lot of time this year looking at Patriots WR Wes Welker’s worth. The NFL’s leader in receptions is in the final year of his contract, and it will be interesting to see how the Patriots compensate him after what is shaping up to be a career year. Yet if the Patriots and Welker’s representatives can’t reach a new deal, there is now some potential bad news for Welker. It involves the franchise tag. This is a crutch that teams use to hold onto players for one more year, and it’s also something that can buy time before the sides get an agreement. If the Pats want to use it to hang onto Welker, he won’t make as much as he would have last year. As the National Football Post’s Andrew Brandt points out, based on a new calculation, the tags are lower than they would’ve been in 2010.
