On October 24, 2009, the University of Tennessee Volunteers made the four and a half hour trek town to Tuscaloosa. The two teams always meet on the third Saturday in October for their SEC showdown and the competition is typically one for the books. Alabama nose guard Terrence Cody would make sure this game went down in history. Cody blocked a 44-yard field goal attempt, marking his second block in the fourth quarter, causing havoc in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The stop, later dubbed “rocky block” led the Crimson Tide to slide by with a 12-10 win over the Vols and maintain their perfect season. Cody made his NFL debut with the Baltimore Ravens in 2010, but it has not been an easy journey. Prior to his rookie season, Cody failed his conditioning test twice. This past season, Cody only started three games. And things only seem to get worse. After sustaining a hip injury, Cody had to undergo surgery this offseason. While Cody is fairly optimistic about his return at the start of the season, a return to the lineup by training camp is highly unlikely. Cody’s progress post-surgery is typical for his injury and he is recovering at a very steady pace, but a lot of the information regarding his return is still up in the air. The 25-year-old will undergo evaluations prior to the start of training camp on July 25. It is likely that Cody can participate in training camp activities, but he will be restricted. “I’ve been doing good,” Cody told the Baltimore Sun. “I’m doing a lot of work, rehabbing and getting back healthy.” The Ravens have some room to work in case Cody is not ready for the start of the 2013 season. Brandon Williams was drafted out of Missouri Southern and could compete with Cody for the starting position. Head coach John Harbaugh is optimistic about Cody’s return. “He looked really good,” the coach commented when asked about Cody’s progress. Many of us are still waiting for Terrence Cody to have his “rocky block” moment in the NFL. Hopefully with a little time and patience, Cody will return to the Ravens roster healthy and hungry for that standout moment.
