In the retooling of Arizona’s offense during free agency period — including new additions at quarterback, tight end, guard, and potentially wide receiver — the running back situation has been forgotten to some extent. In all the offseason hubbub, last year’s starter Tim Hightower will be seen in Washington this season and Beanie Wells is getting the opportunity to start the season as the team’s top running back.

“I think he’s grown up with another year,” head coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “I think he’s ready to take that role. We’ll see.”

Indeed we will. Wells, who was never 100 percent last season, manged just 116 carries and averaged only 3.4 yards per carry, more than a full yard less than his average the season before (4.5). If he gets 250+ touches this season, expect some good production out of Wells if he can maintain his health and composure, something he’ll be better equipped to handle this year.

But don’t forget the Cardinals spent the 38th overall pick in the draft on Ryan Williams, who can be expected to steal a few carries but will function primarily as a receiving back.
