In a bit of a head scratching move the Bears signed Pro Bowl return man Eric Weems from the Atlanta Falcons. The Bears already have Devin Hester in place, the best return man in the history of the NFL so the move is a bit surprising.
Speculation has already gone in a number of different directions, are the Bears now putting Hester and his bigger salary cap number on the trade market? Is Weems likely seen as a gunner replacement for Corey Graham? What about Johnny Knox and his back injury? Knox's recovery is seen as tenuous and Knox himself made the Pro Bowl as a returner his rookie year.
Here's some of what Weems brings to the table,
The 2010 Pro Bowl special teamer, has 41 career special teams tackles, 815 punt return yards and a touchdown on 77 punt returns (10.6 ypr) and 2,896 kickoff return yards and a touchdown on 113 returns (25.6 ypr) in 55 games (six starts) as a member of the Falcons. His 3,711 total kick return yards are seventh in the NFL over the last five seasons. He ranks 10th in the NFL in punt return average and 11th in kickoff return average during that time.
The news is intriguing to say the least, it makes the Bears a better football team in the immediate but also gives them some flexibility in the trade market as the draft approaches.
