CHICAGO - AUGUST 22: Matt Forte #22 of the Chicago Bears runs for a 32-yard touchdown in the first quarter against the New York Giants during their preseason NFL game at Soldier Field on August 22, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)

Chicago Bears fans and fantasy owners around the world you might be able to breathe a little easier.

Bears coach Lovie Smith was on ESPN Chicago’s WBBM (780-AM) and confirmed that running back Matt Forte was sore but did not have a high ankle sprain as many of us reported.

Forte was injured Thursday night in the Bears ugly 23-10 loss to the Packers.

“Matt did go down with an ankle injury. It’s not a high ankle sprain, as has been reported,” Smith said on WBBM (780-AM). “But right now, you know when you don’t finish the game and he still has some soreness, we’ll continue to monitor it, but we felt we needed another running back here, that’s why we brought back a guy who knows our system and has played good ball for us in Kahlil Bell.”

So basically that six-week prognosis can now be shortened to about 2-3 weeks max.
