Brad Biggs reported late last night that the Chicago Bears will hire Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman as their new head coach.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Chicago will hire Aaron Kromer as their offensive coordinator.
According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, the Bears will likely keep defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli and Jeremy Bates.
Colts OC Bruce Arians and Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell were both in the running for the job, but it became pretty clear that Trestman was really the favorite.
The Bears have shifted their focus to offensive side of the ball, which will force QB Jay Cutler to learn another offensive scheme next year. Trestman is widely respected for his ability to work with quarterbacks and as a leader. He’s been out of the NFL since 2004, so it’s an interesting hire for the Bears, but no team put as much time info finding their next head coach as the Bears did.
Keeping Marinelli is probably a good idea when you consider that their defense has been a solid unit year in and year out. The Bears players were pretty distraught over Lovie Smith being fired, but at least things won’t change all that much on the defensive side.
