Per a report from CNNSI, Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has been ruled out versus the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football. Cutler was diagnosed with a concussion after a vicious hit from Houston Texans linebacker Tim Dobbins last Sunday night. This is the third for Cutler, who suffered previous concussions in 2006 and 2010. Although the hit was not the offensive lines’ fault, the Bears pass protection has been among the weakest unit for the team, and hits on Cutler have not been uncommon. In 2011, Cutler was knocked out in Week 11 after guiding the Bears to a 7-3 record; under backups Caleb Hanie and Josh McCown, they lost five of their last six games, finishing with an 8-8 record. In 2010, Cutler was injured in the NFC Championship game, and the Bears lost the game after Hanie came in. The Bears obvious need for a solid backup may have motivated them to bring in Jason Campbell this year. Although he has never posted a season passer rating higher than 86.4, he does bring veteran experience to the table, having 70 starts in his career. He has also never been teamed with a receiver as dynamic and gifted as Brandon Marshall. The Bears offense has struggled at times even with Cutler in the lineup. Cutler’s passer rating for 2012 has been a mediocre-at-best 80.4, and surprisingly Cutler’s best pass rating for a season was his 2006 rookie year where he posted a 88.5 pass rating. Since coming to Chicago, Cutler’s highest pass rating for a season is 86.3, right about Campbell’s best season. Perhaps the Bears offense won’t struggle without Cutler as much as people think. The Bears also resigned McCown to backup Campbell this week.
