Chicago Bears wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher appears to have overcome the odds to make the final 53-man roster for the second consecutive season.  Prior to the start of training camp it appeared Sanzenbacher was a long shot to make the roster as the final wide receiver.

During the offseason the Bears signed wide receiver Devin Thomas for his special teams abilities.  Thomas abruptly retired during the middle of training camp, which seemed to open the door back up for Sanzenbacher.

Then as fast as that window of opportunity it seemed to close ever so slightly with the re-signing of former Bears special teams ace Rashied Davis.  Davis was not re-signed by the Lions and brought back by the Bears because of his talent on special teams.

Sanzenbacher now appears to have the final receiver spot locked up with Davis' waiver today.

On special teams Sanzenbacher has only gotten better, grading out with the second highest point total during the week two preseason game against the Redskins.

This in turn has likely secured his spot on roster again, assuming the Bears keep six receivers.

Sanzenbacher should be commended for fighting through the adversity he has to this point.  The influx at talent at the position only made his challenge to make the roster even harder.

While it's no guarantee that the Bears will keep six receivers, GM Phil Emery had let on at one point the Bears could keep as many as seven receivers.

In addition quarterback Jay Cutler has been very complimentary of Sanzenbacher, and it never hurts to have the franchise QB on your side.

The next challenge for the young receiver will be remaining on the roster for the foreseeable future.
