Bears rookie could be fighting for more opportunities in 2024 with additions expected to be made at the position
Daniel Bartel-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears' offense will likely be seeing some overhaul additions this offseason to help put the team over the top which could come as a concern for some of the team's 2023 starters.

Leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft, I've been looking back on the Bears' 2023 draft class and analyzing the rookie's first seasons in Chicago. Today, the focus will be on Tyler Scott who will be needing to prove a lot heading into Year 2 next season.

The Bears drafted Scott in the fourth round with the 133rd overall pick acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles in the trade that sent defensive end Robert Quinn to Philly before the 2022 NFL trade deadline. Here's how Scott's rookie season turned out.

Tyler Scott's 2023 Season Overview

The rookie season for the Bears' fourth round wide receiver was filled with a lot of missed opportunities that left an uninspiring feeling heading into 2024. Scott had a lot of plays left on the field either from bad drops or misconnections with either Justin Fields or Tyson Bagent at quarterback.

Despite his struggles, Scott still showed some signs that could prove he has want it takes to eventually turn into a more reliable third option at the position. However, the Bears will need to prioritize a more complete and consistent number two option behind DJ Moore after what Scott showed during his first year in Chicago.

2023 Snap Counts and Stats

Scott got several opportunities to perform on offense for the Bears throughout the season as the third wide receiver in 3-WR sets after Equanimeous St. Brown went down multiple times due to injury. Scott played 50+ percent of the offensive snaps in six different games and 30+ percent of the offensive snaps in 11 different games.

Scott also played considerable special teams snaps during the first-half of the year but was not used at all in that facet during the final six games of the season.Statistically, Scott finished his rookie season with just 17 receptions on 32 targets for 168 receiving yards and seven carries for 41 rushing yards.

It was a disappointing stat line from the fourth-round who played 39% of the offensive snaps. Scott also returned five kickoffs for 108 yards (an average of 21.6 yards per return), but four of them came in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers.

Notable Plays

Scott's contested catch ability was evident throughout the season and this fourth down conversion in double coverage against the Carolina Panthers is a great example.

Scott's massive kickoff return against the Buffalo Bills in the preseason finale gave Bears' fans a lot of hope in his potential on special teams yet he only had one return the entire season after Week 1.

Scott's biggest liability in 2023 came from having a few critical drops during the season such as this pass against the Atlanta Falcons that should have been a potential touchdown to give the Bears a sizable lead late in the third quarter.

Final Verdict and Future Projection

Grade: D

I hate to point out all the negatives during a player's first season in the NFL but unfortunately there weren’t many positives from Scott's rookie campaign. He was able to show some promise that times that helped back up his fourth round status but left too many opportunities on the field with the chances he was given to make an impact on offense. Hopefully he can prove to earn more opportunities in 2024.
