The Chicago Bears signed quarterback Josh McCown on Wednesday to serve as a backup to new starter Caleb Hanie.
The Bears are looking to bolster their quarterback depth after losing Jay Cutler to a fractured thumb.
McCown is familiar with the system employed by Mike Martz after playing with the offensive coordinator during his stint with the Detroit Lions.
"The value for us that I saw is that he's very familiar with what we do," Martz told ESPN Chicago. "He's not a guy that has to come in and learn the system, learn the numbers, learn the system, learn the route trees and stuff. He's been through that, so he gives us a guy who can go right in there and play."
McCown last played for the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League. He has thrown for 6,584 yards with 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions during his NFL career.

SEAN JENSEN: The Kansas City Chiefs, who placed starter Matt Cassel on injured reserve last week, has claimed Kyle Orton, according to multiple reports. Meanwhile, the Bears immediately announced the signing of Josh McCown to a one-year deal.
The Kansas City Chiefs claimed ex-Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton, keeping him away from reuniting with the Bears. The Bears signed veteran quarterback Josh McCown shortly after news broke that they did not get Orton. And the Raiders are not afraid of Devin Hester because they feel they have a better kick returner.

Kyle Orton was claimed on waivers Wednesday by the Kansas City Chiefs, so the Bears shifted to Plan B and signed Josh McCown to fill their need for a veteran backup quarterback.
The Chicago Bears announced Wednesday the signing of former Arizona Cardinals third-round pick Josh McCown as the back-up to new starter Caleb Hanie.
When reports surfaced Tuesday that Kyle Orton was waived by the Denver Broncos after being benched in favor of Tim Tebow, every Bears fan wondered if it was time for the Neckbeard to return to the Chicago.
The timing, just days after Jay Cutler injured his thumb, was too perfect.
However, the Bears weren't the only team with a need at QB. The Houston Texans recently lost...
We are not going to harp on the Jay Cutler injury around here. For the foreseeable future Caleb Hanie is the starting quarterback of the Chicago Bears and no expansive word count columns from me are going to change that. Here’s what I saw Sunday. I wrote about it earlier in the year and was... Read more »
