The Bears today announced the signing of WR Devin Thomas who spent the last two seasons with the New York Giants.  According to the official release Thomas is an accomplished special teams player who had 25 kickoff returns for 607 yards (24.3 ypr), and eight special teams tackles in 20 contests.

Thomas will be looked upon to add some depth but also continue to add to the best teams unit in the NFL.  These types of signings directly correlate with keeping that unit at the top of the NFL which in turn helps the Bears win games.

During the off-season is when the value of the Bears' special teams is so often overlooked.  What can't be understated is just how valuable this unit is to helping the Bears win games.  Thomas is precisely the type of player Dave Toub covets and should make an immediate impact even if it's not noticeable in the box score or in terms of fantasy league points.

Thomas is also a player with solid size going 6-foot-2 221-pounds.  Over his career Thomas has appeared in 55 games played (11 starts) with the Washington Redskins (2008-10), Carolina Panthers (2010) and New York Giants (2010-11), the former second-round pick (34th overall) of the Redskins out of Michigan State has 43 receptions for 482 yards (11.2 ypr) with three touchdowns. He has added 23 special teams tackles, two forced fumbles, 1,445 yards on 60 kickoff returns (24.1 ypr) and a blocked punt.

Kudos to the Bears for doing what is necessary to replace Corey Graham and Zack Bowman's special teams play.  This type of focus on the totality of the roster will help continue to the Bears competitive.
