GREEN BAY, Wis. -- After losing four consecutive games and falling two games out of playoff contention, Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith has decided to switch quarterbacks.
Smith benched Caleb Hanie on Wednesday in favor of Josh McCown.
"We felt like we needed a change," Smith said in a teleconference with Packers media. "Someone to give us a little bit of a spark. It's time for us to make a move so we went with him."
Chicago started the season with Jay Cutler at quarterback, but after he broke his right thumb in Week 11, the Bears have been going with Hanie.
When Cutler was injured, Chicago was 7-3 and in good position to make the playoffs. Now the Bears are 7-7 and would need to finish out the season with back-to-back wins to even potentially earn a Wild Card.
When asked what went wrong with Hanie at quarterback, Smith simply replied, "Don't know."
In Hanie's four starts, he threw three touchdowns and nine interceptions, while completing 50 percent of his passes.
