Ben Garland

Name: Ben Garland
Pos: Defensive Lineman
Ht, Wt: 6’5″, 275*
Age: 24
Exp: 1
College: Air Force
*Reports have Garland at 305

Ben Garland was an undrafted rookie for the Denver Broncos in 2010, a nose guard at Air Force the Broncos saw as a defensive end in their 3-4 defense. I can distinctly remember scouting Garland in training camp that year and coming away impressed, and disappointed that he didn’t make the team. Few will work harder to be a Bronco than Ben Garland.

Analysis: It has been two years since Garland has seen the football field, instead serving the Air Force on active duty while remaining on the Broncos’ reserve/military list. NFLDraftScout.com called him “one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the (Mountain West) Conference all season” his senior year. That year he had 43 tackles, including 10.5 tackles for loss.

Contract Status: $490,000 in 2012; free agent in 2013

2012 Outlook: Garland has increased his weight and has been reportedly competing at DT in OTA’s so far. Outside of Elvis Dumervil, there is not a single clear cut starter across the Broncos’ DL, so the competition at DT and DE will be fierce. All that being said, Garland hasn’t been actively working on his football for two years. He has his work cut out for him. Being flexible in position will serve Garland well. He recently committed to the Colorado Air National Guard, but that shouldn’t interfere with practice or games should he make the team (unless he gets called up for active duty).

As always, we invite you, the readers, to participate. Garland is a nice story, but nice stories don’t win Super Bowls. Do you think he’s good enough to make the Broncos roster?
