While many people have tried to create the thought that there is an issue between Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and new Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley, Big Ben has adamantly implored that is not the case. He is simply “confused” about what’s going to happen with his offense as Haley implements his new system.

The general consensus coming into this season was that the Steelers were going to get back to smash-mouth football and not pass as much, but Roethlisberger said on Rich Eisen’s podcast that he is hearing the exact opposite from Haley. Roethlisberger said:

“I get a little confused at times because I know so much has been made about us quote-unquote throwing the ball too much, or we’re going back to Steeler football and running the ball more. But in these meetings I’ve had with coach Haley he’s all about the no-huddle, and using our wide receiver weapons, and throwing the ball, and stuff like that, so I’m still confused. I’m not sure what’s going to happen yet.”

Let’s be realistic here. The Steelers defense is in a transition phase and is still old in some areas. They’ll be good, but not as dominant as in the past. The league is becoming increasingly pass-based, and given the weapons the Steelers possess at wide receiver, it would make no sense to go back to smash-mouth football, especially with top running back Rashard Mendenhall possibly out for the season with an ACL injury.

Todd Haley has coached many top offenses, including the 2008 Cardinals Super Bowl offense that was third in points in the NFL that season. While the system may be new, and could create some confusion for Big Ben and the offense, I have no doubt that Haley will be successful in getting the unit to perform to its highest potential, something former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was routinely unable to do.
