During the period between the start of free agency in mid March and the NFL Draft in late April, the Texans apparently received a trade offer from the Cleveland Browns as was eventually confirmed by the Houston Chronicle’s John McClain. The deal would have apparently sent the Browns’ second first-round draft pick (22nd overall) to the Texans in exchange for Tate. Obviously the deal didn’t go through and the Browns eventually traded up to the 3rd overall pick and selected Alabama RB Trent Richardson. What’s interesting is the Texans now have an idea about what they could get in a deal for Tate should the time come when the organization decides to trade him.

Tate had a breakout season in 2011 after missing all of his rookie season a year earlier to a broken ankle suffered in the preseason. Playing behind Foster, Tate still managed 175 carries for 942 yards and four TDs. Tate also hauled in 13 catches for 98 yards. With the Texans offense so heavily predicated on the run game, Tate was still able to get enough touches to significantly contribute despite playing behind Foster. And therein lies the problem. Since the Texans run the ball so frequently and utilize two halfbacks, Tate is an incredibly valuable player for this offense.
