It was apparent before the preseason even began that the Cincinnati Bengals were interested in keeping the defensive core that ranked fifth best in the NFL last season. After signing DE Carlos Dunlap to an extension and using the franchise tag on DE Michael Johnson, the possibility of the Bengals reaching an agreement with Atkins greatly improved.
That possibility became reality...
The Bengals have signed defensive tackle Geno Atkins to a five-year contract extension, locking up one of their best defensive players through 2018.
The All-Pro tackle, a fourth-round pick in 2010, was entering the final year on his original deal. He made the Pro Bowl each of the last two seasons. Atkins had 12 1/2 sacks last season, the most by any interior lineman in the NFL....
An underlying theme throughout training camp and the preseason has been if the Bengals would be able to agree to an extension with Geno Atkins. With the regular season set to begin on Sunday in Chicago both sides have agreed to a deal according to a league source.
The five year $55 million deal would be second among defensive tackles in terms of average per year at $11 million per...

Cincinnati Bengals (0-0) at Chicago Bears (0-0)

This does make some sense. They probably have more non-quarterback talent than any team in that division...
A couple days ago I made the Cincinnati Bengals my Super Bowl Champs pick for 2013. And I’m not the only one embracing the Stripey Wotsits as your next NFL champs. Other league pundits are talking about this idea, if not agreeing with it.
Maybe the Cincinnati Bengals are the sexy 2013 NFL champs prediction. Like Sarah Jones level sexy.
