Former Ohio State running back Dan Herron was among 18 players waived by the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday night to get down to the 53-man roster limit.
The sixth-round draft pick averaged only 1.7 yards per carry in the preseason. He ran 15 times for 29 yards during the final preseason game at Indianapolis on Thursday night.
The most experienced player waived was linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy, a fourth-round pick in 2010 who missed last season with an Achilles tendon injury.
The Bengals also placed defensive tackle Pat Sims on the physically unable to perform list. Sims missed the last five games last season because of ankle injuries that limited him during training camp. He won't be able to practice for the first six weeks.
Linebacker Dontay Moch will miss the first four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
The Bengals also placed safety Tony Dye on a reserve list with an ankle injury, ending his season. Defensive tackle Nick Hayden was released with an injury settlement following his ankle injury.
Also waived were running back Jourdan Brooks, tight end Colin Cochart, long snapper Bryce Davis, fullback James Develin, defensive end DeQuin Evans, receiver Vidal Hazelton, cornerback T.J. Heath, guard Otis Hudson, linebacker Grant Hunter, defensive end Micah Johnson, linebacker Emmanuel Lamur, cornerback Chris Lewis-Harris, defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, offensive tackle Matthew O'Donnell, quarterback Zac Robinson and guard Reggie Stephens.
Muckelroy, Cochart and Hayden are not eligible for the team's practice squad.

Bengals QB Dalton injures arm
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton left on the Bengals' first series Thursday night with a bruised right arm.
Dalton was hit by Robert Mathis and others on the Bengals' sixth offensive play.
Initially, he stayed down, then got up and walked toward the sideline where he dropped to the ground again. Trainers appeared to be checking his elbow.
Bruce Gradkowski replaced Dalton...
Bengals trying to be more than one-year wonder
Throughout their 44-year history, the Cincinnati Bengals have rarely been more than a one-year playoff wonder.
The Bengals have gone to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons only once. They went to the Super Bowl for the first time and lost to San Francisco during the 1981 season, then made the playoffs again the following year.
That's it.
It's even worse by another measure...
Expectations High in 2012 for Cincinnati Bengals
A year ago, the Cincinnati Bengals were the odds on favorite to win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Their veteran quarterback, Carson Palmer, had sworn never to play for the organization again, leaving the offense to an untested second round pick, Andy Dalton. Their new offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden, had his greates successes in the Arena Football League and was installing a new...
Late Night Roster Thoughts
With the season opener only a few days away and the Bengals roster cuts made today, there’s no better time than now to offer some rapid fire thoughts on the roster.
-I’m sad to see Roddrick Muckelroy go. I thought Muckelroy played well in the preseason (and in his limited opportunities as a rookie) and figured he would be a decent replacement should Rey Maualuga ever get...
Bengals sign Jeff Faine as insurance for Kyle Cook
After center Kyle Cook saw a foot specialist early in the week, the Bengals brought in Jeff Faine for a visit as insurance for Cook, whose initial prognosis did not look good. After the Bengals signed Faine, Cook’s prognosis isn’t looking any better. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, “indications are” he’ll miss a “large amount of time,” possibly even the whole...
Andy Dalton Leaves Game With Injury
Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton left Thursday's preseason game with an injury to his throwing arm.Fantasy Spin:Dalton was sandwiched by two Colts defenders on the opening drive in the team's final exhibition game. The quarterback didn't need to go to the locker room, however, so this shouldn't be a serious issue.
Bengals Sign 7 Players To Practice Squad
The Cincinnati Bengals announced seven players have signed onto the team's practice squad, most of whom we projected (at least mentioned as likely candidates) with the exception for long snapper Bryce Davis. QB Zac Robinson, RB Daniel Herron, RB Jourdan Brooks, OG Otis Hudson, OLB Emmanuel Lamur, LS Bryce Davis, CB Chris Lewis-Harris.
That leaves one spot available. Cincinnati...
Bengals QB Andy Dalton's Arm Injury Isn't Serious
In a week in which the Bengals were already dealing with one major injury to a starter, the last thing anyone wanted to see was what happened on their sixth offensive play of Thursday nights preseason finale against the Colts.
The good news out of this one is that Andy Dalton appears fine after taking a hit from Colts defensive end Robert Mathis. The original report was a bruised...
Bengals, Colts make host of lineup changes
The Colts and Bengals will each be missing five starters in Thursday night's preseason finale.
Indy will play without receiver Austin Collie, cornerback Jerraud Powers, defensive end Cory Redding and left guard Joe Reitz. All are hurt. Dwight Freeney also is sitting out and will be replaced in the lineup by Justin Hickman.
Ricardo Matthews takes over for Redding, Donnie Avery...
A Little Nervous…
Tonight our Bengals play their final tune-up for the regular season against the new-look, Luck-ed up Colts.
There won’t be much to see from the starters, so there won’t be much opportunity to see the guys who will take the majority of the snaps against Baltimore in the big Monday Night opener. That’s too bad, because frankly I’m getting a little uneasy about things about...
Bengals C Kyle Cook's Injury Is A High Ankle Sprain
Three days ago reports surfaced that center Kyle Cook could be lost to the season with an injury suffered against the Green Bay Packers last Thursday. He reportedly visited with a foot specialist, learning that the injury is much more serious than originally believed. Cincinnati quickly acted, signing veteran Jeff Faine, who could start the regular season opener against the Baltimore...
