It looks as if the Bengals are starting another reclamation project.
Earlier this morning, Cincinnati made it official that they had signed former LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery. Montgomery was drafted by Houston in the third round of the 2013 draft, but he never played a down for them.
Montgomery, along with teammates Cierre Wood and Willie Jefferson, was released by the Texans seven weeks into the season. According to ESPN, they were released due to a violation of team rules that stemmed from marijuana use in the team hotel.
The Raiders took a chance on Montgomery in December, but he was released three days later.
There is no doubt that Montgomery has the opportunity to be a very successful NFL player. He was a two-time first team All-SEC selection at LSU, and he had the talent to be a first or second round selection. The problem is in his attitude.
“He’s a guy who on tape is a solid, solid second-round pick,” said NFL Network’s Mike Mayock. “But a lot of teams didn’t like his interview process. Team’s didn’t like his profile as far as who the kid was and what he was all about. They weren’t sure he was focused on football, and a lot of teams quite frankly took him off the board.”
Signing Montgomery is not a surprise for the Bengals. They have a long history of signing talented, yet troubled players whom have fallen out of favor with their original teams – Derrick Harvey and Aaron Maybin. Still, those players quickly flamed out and were released before the start of the season. The player who’s footsteps Cincinnati is hoping Montgomery can follow is Vontaze Burfict.
Burfict was at one point a first-round prospect heading into the draft, but his character concerns led to a massive drop in value. So much so that he fell out of the draft completely. The Bengals picked him up as an undrafted free agent, and he has since turned into one of the best linebackers in the league.
If the Bengals believe they can keep Montgomery under control, then they could be getting a major impact player on their defense. If anyone can do it, it’s Cincinnati.
