The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to a deal with wide receiver Laveranues Coles, who was recently released by the New York Jets.
Coles, the likely candidate to replace Houshmandzadeh in Cincinnati, reportedly had a one-year offer of $6 million on the table, but turned it down. Based on the Bengals offer, he could be making $7 million per season.
Comparing Coles' four-year, $28 million contract with that of Houshmandzadeh's (five years, $40 million with $16 million in guarantees) proves that the Seahawks didn't necessarily overpay for T.J., but rather satisfied his market value. They're nearly the same age, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh was obviously the more coveted free agent.
