Giants Football Blog:
DT Rocky Bernard is in a much different place today than he was a year ago at this time.
He had been brought in as a free agent to help the interior D-line rotation. Instead, he ended up being practically useless due to injury. The 31-year-old former Seattle Seahawk spent most of the 2009 season trying to tackle people with one arm.
You see, Bernard entered the season with a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder and tried to play through it. His 22 tackles and one QB sack over 15 games should have been an indication that something was wrong with this player, who had made quite a reputation for himself as a run-stopper.
“It is frustrating, really,” Bernard told The News’ Ralph Vacchiano in May. “You never want to use injuries as an excuse. But when you have such a tough injury like that, it’s one of those things where you can play through it, but you know you’re not going to be the same. Hopefully people won’t use it against me.”
