Fox Sports North:
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. Vikings receiver Bernard Berrian was a surprise deactivation before Sundays 34-10 win against the Arizona Cardinals. About an hour later cornerback Cedric Griffin wasnt part of the starting lineup in an unexpected move.
Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said after the game both were disciplinary actions, refusing to go into further detail. Neither player spoke to the media following the game or on Monday, but Frazier made it clear that he wants his players to be accountable for their actions.
I really dont want to get into why we chose to have discipline in this particular case, Frazier said of sitting Berrian. But one thing that all of our players know, were going to try to do the right things when it comes to what were asking of him, and we expect a reciprocation from them to do the things that were asking them to do. Then there are consequences. But Bernard knows what we want to get done, just like the other 52 guys on our roster.
Berrian was in a twitter feud with fans and state representative John Kriesel following last weeks loss at Kansas City. Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press then reported Sunday that Berrian had missed two team meetings on Saturday.
Frazier wouldnt comment on what lead to the disciplinary action for Berrian and said the deactivation wasnt in response to what happened on Twitter. Frazier said the receiver wouldnt be cut because of the problem and made another vow that the Vikings plan to get the beleaguered receiver more involved in the offense.
He understands what we have to get done and whats required of him, like all of our guys do, Frazier said. Going forward, weve just got to do the right things.
Griffins issues are unknown, but he sat out the first defensive series on Sunday and was replaced by Asher Allen, who was also part of the pregame defensive introductions. Griffin returned to his usual outside cornerback spot for the second defensive series.
Berrians case could be a bit trickier though. Berrians production has fallen off even further this season and the Vikings are interested to see more of what Devin Aromashodu can provide the offense.
Devin did a good job and (Michael Jenkins) been doing a good job for us, so well talk about that a little bit more, but we dont want to shortchange Devin, Frazier said. Hes doing some good things, but were counting on Bernard to step up and play well for us. Well see how we end up developing a rotation for this next game.
Aromashodu caught two passes for 81 yards Sunday, including a 60-yard catch and run on a crossing pattern for Minnesotas longest offensive play of the season. He added a diving 34-yard touchdown catch a week earlier.
Meanwhile, Berrian had just two catches for 37 yards through the first four games despite being targeted 16 times and playing nearly 200 snaps.
One of Berrians twitter comments last week was in regard to how hes been open the last four years. Hes never developed a connection with any of the teams quarterbacks though, going from Tarvaris Jackson to Gus Frerotte to Brett Favre to Donovan McNabb this season.
I think Bernards head is in the right place, Frazier said. He wants to help this football team win. Were going to give him every opportunity to help this football team win.
Its not the first time Frazier has had to discipline a player this season, but hes not going to the drastic measures like he did when he cut left tackle Bryant McKinnie in training camp after McKinnie showed up severely out of shape.
Frazier is sticking with Berrian though, just like he has stood by the struggling McNabb.
We fully expect Bernard to help our football team be successful in 2011 and were looking forward to him making a major contribution over the rest of this season, Frazier said. Were counting on him. He knows that. We need him to play well for us in order for our offense to continue to improve.
Game ball for Harvin: Receiver Percy Harvin touched the ball twice on Sunday on one catch and one rushing attempt, but Frazier said he would be receiving a game ball for his performance anyway.
Frazier praised Harvins blocking in the run game, helping Adrian Peterson to his biggest game of the season. Harvin provided a key block on Petersons 24-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Adrian had a great day, but some of those runs wouldnt have occurred without Percy, Frazier said. It doesnt show up in the stat sheets but you talk about being an unselfish player and hes a star player. Hes taking out linebackers, taking out safeties and some of these plays were designed for him to do just that; never complained.
While hes had to deal with the Berrian and Griffin disciplinary issues, Frazier thought Harvin was a good example for other players.
He really epitomized in a lot of ways what we talk about when we say, Do whats best for the team., Frazier said. Thats what we talked about on Saturday night. We have to forget about my personal stats. Ive got to do whatever Ive got to do to help our football team (get) wins. I cant get caught up in how many catches I have, how many interceptions I get, how many sacks. Team. Team. And he epitomized it the way he played on Sunday.
