It’s true — just ask Norv Turner or A.J. Smith.

First, you get to work in beautiful San Diego. The weather is the best in the country, no arguments needed. Second, you have the easiest boss, ever. The Chargers owner A.G. Spanos, and his son, have shown a propensity for the mediocre when it comes to football. The team only gave Marty Schottenheimer one year with Phillip Rivers before showing him the door. And that was after a 14 win regular season! Clearly they deemed the coach as the problem, or at least as not part of the solution. This past season was no less than Norv Turner’s 6th season with Rivers in San Diego.

The Chargers made the playoffs each of Turner’s first 3 seasons. The last 2 seasons the team has been in a rather pronounced free-fall. In 2010 the team missed the playoffs for only the 2nd time in 7 seasons. This year Turner’s team made it two in a row as they missed the playoffs again.

It would seem the leash on Turner has been substantial. The Chargers general manager has been on an even longer one.

A.J. Smith has been with the San Diego organization since 2003. That means he saw all but one of Schottenheimer’s seasons and all of Turner’s current run.

The Charger’s have perennially been known as one of the most “talented” teams in the NFL. Thus, I guess A.J. Smith is doing his job. With all this talent, shouldn’t the coach be able to win the worst division in the NFL?

Maybe this just goes to show the attitude of those San Diegans. It seems like the ultimate relaxing place. Nothing is really a problem. Any issue is only a small bump in the road.

Back east this type of laissez faire attitude is not often accepted. We make a living making mountains out of mole hills. Maybe we can take a lesson from these SuperChargers. Although they cut it from their official name, clearly everything is just SUPER in San Diego!

Though, this doesn’t explain why Turner gets the San Diego vacation while ol’ Marty was taken to the hypothetical woodshed and axed.
