Detroit-lions-training
Disappointed but optimistic, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew knows starting running back Jahvid Best will be back on the football field. He just doesn't know when. The sluggish progress of his recovery from a concussion last October has everyone in the organization feeling anxious, among other emotions. "A little bit surprised, a little bit disappointed," Mayhew said Tuesday before the Lions' training camp practice. "Everything was trending toward him being ready to go on the first day of training camp. It just didn't happen that way. We have to kind of adjust. We have adjusted our expectation on that." Best wasn't cleared and hasn't participated in full team workouts since he suffered a concussion in Week 6 against the 49ers last season, his second in 2011 and third in his career. He said in June that concussion-like symptoms were gone and he was ramping up his training. Best was cleared for football activity, but coach Jim Schw...

Lions ready to march like Saints of 09

Undisciplined, unprofessional, unprincipled—merely a few words to describe the untrained beasts of 2011. Hoping to kick those issues to dirt, the Detroit Lions take an adrenaline-propelled stride into camp with a penchant for more organized war, with Jim Schwartz, the leader of the pride, adopting a Belichickian structured approach. Undoubtedly one of the most talented [...]

Detroit Lions Running Back Situation Remains Clouded

The Detroit Lions front office told reporters at the start of this month that they were content with their roster at the running back position. As July comes to a close and training camps are finally open, perhaps the Lions will have to reevaluate the position moving forward. I recently penned a column about which NFL teams that would frustrate fantasy football owners this season...

Lions rookie Ryan Broyles gets cussed out by head coach

Detroit Lions wide receiver Ryan Broyles received an R-Rated tirade by head coach Jim Schwartz after forgetting to buckle his chin strap (Credit: AP Photo/Paul Sancya) Second round draft pick Ryan Broyles out of Oklahoma probably thought his first official NFL practice would go a little more smoother than it did. Broyles, who was taken off the physically unable to perform list on...

Lions Training Camp: Backus out with broken thumb, Reiff working with second and third team

Longtime Lions starting left tackle Jeff Backus injured his thumb this past Saturday and was subsequently held out of team drills Sunday and Monday. According to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, Corey Williams and Jason Fox filled in for the injured Backus who was also wearing a hard cast to protect the injured thumb which is now believed to be broken. Backus, who had his contract...

Lions might use Logan at running back

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- With Mikel Leshoure coming off surgery for a torn Achilles and Jahvid Bests uncertain future because of concussion problems, the Detroit Lions desperately need contingency plans at running back. One of those options from within is moving diminutive receiverreturn specialist Stefan Logan to fill a versatile role as sort of a poor mans Darren Sproles out of the...

Consistent Hanson enters 21st season with Lions

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Derek Dimke makes Jason Hanson feel old. Dimke, a rookie kicker in the Detroit Lions' camp, was in diapers the first time Hanson put on a NFL uniform. Hanson, entering his 21st season in the league, made his debut with the Lions in 1992. Dimke was 2 years old. It's no wonder that Dimke felt like he had to call Hanson "Sir" when he first met...

Detroit Lions: Elite offense, mediocre defense

There is absolutely no surprise in this title.  Everyone and their extended family knows that the Detroit Lions can score points with the best of them.  Last year, the problem became that they could give them up with great proficiency as well. Matthew Stafford threw for over 5,000 yards.  Calvin Johnson made a run at Herman Moore’s single-season receiving record of 1,686 yards...

Contract year for majority of Lions defense

Players in the final year of their contracts should be a little more focused, a little more determined, a little more passionate. If so, the Detroit Lions defense should be flying around this year with players trying to prove they deserve big paydays all over the field. More than half of the starters are entering the final year of their deals. The group includes cornerback Chris...

Fairley's court hearing delayed

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley's court hearing on a marijuana possession charge in Alabama has been delayed until Nov. 27. Fairley was scheduled to appear in Mobile Municipal Court Tuesday for his April 3 arrest. Police say he was arrested after people complained that his Cadillac Escalade was speeding through a Mobile neighborhood. Officers smelled marijuana coming...

Schwartz says no real shots fired at Packers

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz found some vintage irony in this perceived feud with the Green Bay Packers. It all goes back to what he insists was an innocent comment during the offseason. "We had no sporting clays today or no amusement parks or water parks," Schwartz said after a mini-camp practice last month. Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy took...

Comments on the Detroit Lions by the AP Pro32 panel (ranking in parentheses): DETROIT LIONS (11, TIE) Rick Gosselin (Dallas Morning News, 7): Lions should have running game to complement passing of Matthew Stafford with return from injuries of Jahvid Best, Mikel Leshoure.
