Jason Campbell vs David Garrard

In my opinion, the Jets will be and should be keeping Mark Sanchez as their #1 quarterback. Sanchez is a young QB who’s only played three years in the NFL and led the Jets to two AFC Championship appearances. Yes, he’s made some awful decisions during his tenure, but he’s also showed guts, leadership and flashes of brilliance. So putting aside the silly trade rumors about Peyton Manning and other starting QB’s, the Jets need to get serious about finding someone to back-up Mark Sanchez. Two viable options who are both free agents are ex-Raiders QB Jason Campbell and ex-Jaguars QB David Garrard. Here’s some more information below about both Jason Campbell and David Garrard’s situation.

Jason Campbell: The Jets are apparently quite interested in pursuing Jason Campell, who played well for the Raiders during the first 6 games of the 2011 season until he broke his collarbone. Here’s some notes about Campbell, documenting the Jets interest, according to Rich Cimini.

The Jets have discussed the possibility of pursuing free-agent QB Jason Campbell(Raiders). He led the Raiders to a 4-2 start last season before suffering a season-ending collarbone injury. One of Ryan’s new coaches is very familiar with Campbell — former Raiders WRs coach Sanjay Lal. New O.C. Tony Sparano is planning to incorporate some Raiders concepts into his playbook. One potential issue: The feeling is that Campbell needs practice reps to be effective, and there’s concern he wouldn’t do well in a No. 2 role because of the paucity of reps.

Jason Campbell is certainly a quarterback who could teach Mark Sanchez a lot about perserverance and sticking through tough times. After all, it seems like Jason Campbell continually gets the short end of the stick time after time. Campbell definitely still has talent, he’ll never be a top-10 QB, but he’d be a great back-up and someone who can win games as evidenced last year in Oakland with his 4-2 start.

David Garrard: Back in September 2011, I wrote an article about how the Jets should purse David Garrard. I was extremely concerned about Mark Sanchez being significantly injured due to poor offensive line play, which never occured [probably because we didn't play the Saints ;) ]. Now, I still believe that David Garrard needs to considered by the Jets because we all know Mark Brunell has seen his last days in the NFL. David Garrard never put up massive numbers in Jacksonville, but he was a reliable starter who could manage games with Maurice Jones Drew. If Mark Sanchez were to go down with an injury, David Garrard could be a viable back-up who could potential put wins on the schedule for the Jets.

I think Garrard would be an ideal guy to push Mark Sanchez for the starting job. Sanchez is a better player on his best day, but Garrard is better on a normal day. In order to win and keep the starting job, Sanchez would need to finally start playing with that elusive consistency.

With Garrard behind Sanchez, consistently pushing him to improve, it might do wonders for Mark’s career. If Mark struggles, which is always a high possibility, David Garrard could always be an option to get the job done.

In the end, I truly believe both Jason Campbell and David Garrard would be instant upgrades for the Jets at the back-up QB position. They would both challenge Mark Sanchez to improve and provide viable relief if Sanchez goes down with injury or completely sucks. So enough talking on my part, who would you rather have as the Jets back-up QB, Jason Campbell or David Garrard.

Report: Jets have interest in Campbell

Although Rex Ryan insists he is sticking with Mark Sanchez, the Jets are reportedly interested in signing Jason Campbell as a backup quarterback. His presence could put pressure on Sanchez to perform.

Mike Tannenbaum’s Career As New York Jets GM: Part 1, The Mangini Years

New York Jets General Manger Mike Tannenbaum deserves a large share of the credit for the New York Jets being a playoff team in 2006, 2009 and 2010. He also deserves a large share of the credit for the Jets missing the playoffs in 2007, 2008, and 2011. Since taking over as GM, the Jets have been a .500 or better team in 5 of 6 seasons but have only made the playoffs half of the...

GARTH: Rest Miller?

I'd give the Sabre an A+ grade for their recent 3-1-1 road trip. 7 outta 10 points is a nice haul for the team. The Jets presented the only spped bump for the Sabres on the final night of the trip. Running a "hard hockey" gauntlet against the Rangers, Ducks, Sharks, Canucks and Jets in six nights is enough to deplete any NHL squad. Its understandable that the...
