One immediate reaction to the Ravens’ decision to sign free agent center Andre Gurode Sunday was that it raised questions whether starter Matt Birk would be able to play in Sunday’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Those questions found no footing with Birk, who said his surgically-repaired left knee is slowly improving to the point where he hopes to start against Pittsburgh.
Birk said he has not concerned himself with the impact of Gurode’s presence on the active roster.
“I don’t worry about that,” Birk said. “I’m thrilled that we got him. I know him a little bit. He’s a great guy, a great player, but as far as how it affects me, if it affects me, it affects me. I’m too old to get caught up in that drama and that kind of thing. I’m just grateful for the opportunity and grateful to be here and try to help this team win.”
