Bjoern Werner was selected 114 spots higher than Robert Mathis in their respected drafts, so naturally the expectations from each were completely different. Yet, in many ways they were both the same. Both were brought into the league to help take off presure from a dominating sack artist, Mathis to help Freeney, and Werner to help Mathis. Both struggled as rookies, both played in all 16 games, Mathis finished with 3.5 sacks, while Werner finished with 2.5, Mathis with 18 tackles, Werner with 14. Any then, Mathis entered his second season. Mathis exploded for the Colts in 2004 with 10.5 sacks and six forced fumbles, easily taking pressure off of Freeney, and help setting on of the most dominating sack duos of all-time. Enter, Werner. Werner has the capabilities to become a solid player for the Colts, and now would be the time to show why he was a first round pick in 2013. He showed dominant flashed in his rookie year where his versatility at stopping the run in open space proved to be at an elite level, but he is still struggling to convert to a hybrid outside linebacker in Chuck Pagano’s 3-4 defensive scheme. When a blocker would get his hands on him early in a passing down, Werner would almost become immobile and be stood straight up. He has the speed and strengthen to attack a tackle on the outside edge, but his technique is still way off. His long arms should allow him to keep his body away from a tackle, and allow him to get pressure on the quarterback. Too many times last year when contact was made by a tackle, Werner was stood straight up and stopped dead in his tracts. Something many scouts thought was his weakness, and why he was labeled by many as a second round player. Yet, technique can be taught, not the athleticism his possesses. Who better to learn from the Mathis? Mathis is one of the best ever to hone the skill at bending his waist using the right amount of explosion, speed, and power to get around any tackle in the NFL. Something Werner will be working on this offseason, especially with Mathis out for the first four games of the season. Almost any improvement of production from Werner in 2014 will be an upgrade for the Colts, and they need it now more than ever.
