The San Francisco 49ers suffered a big blow when running back Kendall Hunter going down for the season last week. According to Dan Arkush of ProFootballWeekly.com, a source has told him that the 49ers’ back up running back duties will now either go to Brandon Jacobs or rookie LaMichael James. Jacobs, who finally had begun seeing some limited action, is considered by most observers to be the front-runner to spell Gore. “The real reason they got him was in case there was an injury,” the insider said of Jacobs. “He’s been a longtime starter before in a pro-style offense and can handle any situation with better size and blocking ability than James.” On the other hand, as has been the case with Kaepernick, James regularly does things in practice that makes his teammates stand up and take notice. Fellow RB Anthony Dixon, who also could figure in the backup mix, recently compared James to the Vikings’ Percy Harvin. “With his big-play talent and (offensive coordinator) Greg Roman’s innovative play-calling ability, James and Kaepernick together could combine to do a lot of the same kind of stuff James did so well at Oregon,” the insider said. In any event, it’s unlikely head coach Jim Harbaugh will tip his hand regarding a preference. “There’s no way we’re gonna’ know,” the insider chuckled. “Harbaugh will never say what he’s really thinking.” Jacobs likely has the upper hand on James since he’s been in the league for so many years and has more experience in pass protection.  But James is a lot more explosive and is a bigger playmaker.  Right now, I think james will end up winning the back job.   var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = 'http://widget.crowdignite.com/widgets/27484?_ci_wid=_CI_widget_'+_CI.counter; script.async = true; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(script, ref); })(); sr_adspace_id = 1000005525107; sr_adspace_width = 300; sr_adspace_height = 250; sr_ad_new_window = true; sr_adspace_type = "graphic";
