Panthers head coach Ron Rivera’s decision to punt at the end of his team’s loss against the Falcons rather than go for it on 4th and less than a yard has been a topic of discussion among Carolina fans this week. The Panthers were past midfield, and Rivera decided to pin Matt Ryan and company deep rather than trying to ice the game by converting a first down.It sounds like wide receiver Brandon LaFell disagreed with the decision.“It’s fourth and inches, we’ve got Mike Tolbert, we’ve got Jonathan Stewart, some of the best power backs in the league,” LaFell told The Mac Attack on WFNZ in Charlotte Tuesday. “I felt like we could have got that yard. And I didn’t want to put our defense in that situation, because we should have won the game right there with that possession.”The situation the defense had to face was not a difficult one. Carolina was able to pin the Falcons at their own 1-yard line with 59 seconds remaining. Rivera clearly made the right choice, but his defense put Atlanta ...

Brandon LaFell: “I felt like we could have got that yard”

Carolina Panthers’ receiver Brandon LaFell is still smarting from the heartbreaking loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The upstart target for Cam Newton didn’t feel like punting was the right choice in the waning moments of thier Sunday game. In the NFL it’s a game of inches, and pound of courage, they had the inches, just not the courage. Protecting a one point lead, the Panthers...

No more "what if" games for Panthers

If you ask the Carolina Panthers, there was plenty of blame to go around for losing in the final seconds at Atlanta last Sunday. From safety Haruki Nakamara, who blamed himself for the defeat, to coach Ron Rivera, plenty of mistakes were made that proved costly. Even quarterback Cam Newton shares culpability. His fumble that may have turned a first down into a fourth down with less...

NFL First Quarter Report Card: Carolina Panthers

Just let me preface this by saying that I’m probably going to get some cruel comments, because I haven’t bought what this team was selling from the moment they decided to tie up $81 million on their running back duo. They’re fine players, no doubt, but to put that much of a cap hit on a position like that is just foolish. Especially when your defense was in major need of...

Carolina Panthers: Week 5 NFL Power Rankings (#19)

Last week: 19 (+0) Record: 1-3 Last week, I said they were better than they looked against the Giants and they showed it against the Falcons, leading late and only losing by 2. Their decision not to go for the clincher and go for it on 4th down was head scratching, considering all the resources they put into their running game, and their defense’s inability to stop the Falcons...

Despite pass push, Panthers secondary struggling

The Panthers believe they've found a pass rush. Now they just need to shore up their secondary. Despite Carolina's 12 sacks on the season - including a franchise-record seven against Atlanta last Sunday - the defensive backfield remains an issue. The Panthers are giving up 259 yards passing a game. And they allowed Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to throw for 369 yards and...

Seahawks-Panthers Preview

Cam Newton is apologizing for a mistake that likely cost the Carolina Panthers a victory last weekend, but there is no quarterback controversy for coach Ron Rivera's team. Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll could be faced with one soon if rookie Russell Wilson can't limit his errors. Newton and the Panthers will try to avoid a third consecutive loss when the Seahawks go...

Panthers' Rivera not second guessing his decisions

While Panthers coach Ron Rivera says he isn't second-guessing his decision making in Sunday's heartbreaking 30-28 loss to the Falcons, he is considering a change at free safety. Haruki Nakamura had a nightmarish day for the Panthers. He had a hand in allowing all three Atlanta touchdowns, and the 59-yard reception by Roddy White when the Falcons were backed up at their 1...

What to Like/Dislike About the Falcons Victory Over the Panthers

Coming off of a last-second win over the Carolina Panthers, there is a lot to like and also a lot to dislike about how the Falcons performed. In the NFL you simply aren't going to go 16-0 and teams that you don't expect to challenge you will jump up and smack you in the mouth on occassion. That's what happened this week with the Panthers in the Georgia Dome. Let's...

Seattle Seahawks (2-2) at Carolina Panthers (1-3)

Seattle Seahawks (2-2) at Carolina Panthers (1-3) I love exploiting home/road discrepancies, so Seattle is one of my favorite teams to bet on. I’m 4-0 picking their games this year simply following the concept of betting on them at home and against them on the road, all 4 of which were significant plays. They are 29-14 ATS at home since 2007 and 14-29 ATS on the road. This year...
