Bears linebacker and team captain Brian Urlacher was named NFC defensive player of the month yesterday. Urlacher led the NFC with 49 tackles in December. Urlacher had 17  tackles in a loss to the Patriots and 11 tackles  in a win over the Lions and also had 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble as the Bears won the NFC North and secured a first-round bye in the playoffs. For the season, Urlacher had a team leading 126 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception. He is clearly back to the level that he used to be after missing 15 games last season with a wrist injury. He isn’t as fast as he once was and that was evident on an interception against the Vikings that was reversed, but he is stronger than ever. For the Bears to succeed in the playoffs, Urlacher has to keep the defense ready for everything that comes at them. He has to play well in passing downs as well as running downs.
