Thank you NFL Draft, for restoring normalcy to a wickedly insane offseason. The playoffs were a downright bummer for this Saints fan. The Super Bowl was whack. Then came that ***** of a snitch, bounty drama, and the exile of Sean Payton. And of course, the Saints have yet to freaking sign Drew Brees. So needless to say, this chick could use the distraction that the draft tends to bring.

Will angels descend from the heavens when the “savior” Andrew Luck finally hoists his white Colts jersey? What kind of crazy ass socks will RG III be wearing when he goes to the Redskins? Will Eagles fans boo regardless of who gets picked for their team because well, you know, that’s just how they roll? Will I be sober enough come the third round to even care who the Saints draft when they finally get their turn to make a selection? (In case you forgot, we dealt away our first rounder last year and got stripped off a second round pick when Goodell laid the smack down. Oy vey…)

I take comfort in the fact that the Saints do a solid job of stealing good players deep in the draft so I’m not overly concerned with how long it will take us to get on the clock. Obviously, defense has to be top priority. Last season’s “bounty pot” must have been like $5 and a Popeye’s coupon because I sure as hell didn’t see too many big plays going down on a regular basis. We couldn’t get to quarterbacks, we lacked speed, and turnovers seemed few and far between. Now, we’re down a cornerback and likely a defensive end once the league’s bounty punishments for players are revealed and Will Smith is put in a time-out.

The Saints are known for getting “cute” from time to time with their draft picks but don’t expect that this time around. There is too much at stake and zero room for error. This has been one of the worst offseasons for the team in recent history, some might say ever, making this draft that much more critical. I won’t even pretend to make predictions as to which players will be hanging around once our turn comes and which position the Saints will target first. What I do know is that this is where the rubber meets the road for my team. We have to change the dialogue back to football for the Saints and turn away from this bounty soap opera. It starts with the draft and HOPEFULLY the signing of a happy Drew Brees.

I’m just ready to turn the page. Let the draft day countdown officially begin…
