The Broncos beat the Texans on Sunday, but it was an ugly victory. They didn’t score a touchdown until the fourth quarter and had 13 penalties for 100 yards. Boos rained from the home crowd throughout the game.
“I don’t blame them…I’d be booing too,” said Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett in a post-game news conference.
Fans seemed to be frustrated with the Broncos' offensive performance. They struggled in the red zone, having to settle for two field goals. Russell Wilson didn’t light up the stat sheet, completing 45.2 percent of his passes.
The Broncos haven’t scored a touchdown in the red zone this season. Wilson still seems like he’s trying to develop a chemistry with the Broncos' young wide receivers.
This was a bit concerning because the Broncos were heavily favored over the Texans, a team that is stuck in another rebuild. On paper, they have more talent and should win by more than a touchdown.
However, they scraped by; thankfully wide receiver Courtland Sutton made some key catches, extending slow drives after Jerry Jeudy left the game with a shoulder injury.
“He answered the bell,” Hackett said.
Sutton led the team in receiving with seven catches for 122 yards. Even then he was not satisfied with the offense.
“For us an offense, it’s on us to eliminate those penalties and dumb mistakes,” Sutton told Broncos reporter Sydney Jones. “In a close game, that can hurt us, we don’t wanna beat ourselves again.”
