NASHVILLE, TN - NOVEMBER 01: Head coach Jack Del Rio of the Jacksonville Jaguars looks on against the Tennessee Titans during their game at LP Field on November 1, 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio understands where the NFL is heading and he wants a middle linebacker who can travel in the same direction. NFL offenses are exploding, the read-option, the no huddle, and the hurry up are just a few new wrinkles teams are throwing at opposing defenses. Del Rio is looking for a player who can diagnose what’s going on and then get his teammates in the correct positions. He specifically spoke of the New England Patriots and their meeting in 2012, where he felt it was closer to a track meet than football game. Finding a player who can get the call and communicate them fast is of utmost importance, but should be a little easier for Del Rio since Peyton Manning is on the other side of the ball at practice. However, second year linebacker Nate Irving will get the ‘first crack’ at winning the position. Selected in the third round (67) of the 2010 NFL Draft, the North Carolina product has limited experience, but Del Rio feels he has the tools for what he is looking for. "He's getting the first crack at it, yeah," Del Rio said, via Mike Klis of the Denver Post. "Nate's going to get time in there, Stewart Bradley will get time in there and Stevie Johnson will get time, but Nate is getting the first crack. He's a bright guy. He's naturally a strong-handed guy, a thick guy. He can move. He's got a chance to play at a higher level and we're giving him that opportunity to earn that."
