The Denver Broncos have placed running back Willis McGahee
on injured reserve with a designation to return after Jan. 18, which would be
the AFC title game, reports the Associated Press.
The Broncos put their
31-year-old running back on recallable injured reserve Wednesday, meaning he
can return to practice after missing the final six regular-season games and
play in a game after Jan. 18.
McGahee tore his MCL in his right knee and fractured his leg last weekend against the San Diego Chargers. He sustained the injuries in the
first half of the game and an MRI and other tests ultimately revealed their
extent following the contest.
McGahee won’t require surgery but instead simply time to
heal. The Broncos decided to use their recallable injured reserve slot in order
to provide themselves with roster flexibility.
Denver will use a trio of running backs to replace the
injured McGahee, including rookie Ronnie Hillman, Lance Ball and former
first-round pick Knowshon Moreno.
McGahee had been a productive rusher for the Broncos this
season, as he ranks fifth among AFC running backs with 731 yards. He’s also
caught 26 passes for 221 yards.
