The Browns cut six veterans yesterday, Shaun Rogers (31), Kenyon Coleman (31), David Bowens (33), Robert Royal (31), Eric Barton (33) and John St. Clair (33). With the dismissal of Barton, Bowens, and Coleman, none of Eric Mangini’s ex-Jets remain on the roster (Abe Elam is a free agent).
We’re especially sad to see all-around great guy Bowens go, but these cuts aren’t especially surprising individually or as a whole. The third-oldest roster in the NFL was going to have to get younger at some point. Any or most of these six might have retired or been cut even if Mangini been retained as Browns head coach.
The moves to drop Rogers and Coleman are the most surprising given the Browns lack of depth along the defensive line, but both were relatively expensive ($5 million+, $3 million+, respectively), and potentially misfits on Pat Shurmur’s Browns.
