Found August 30, 2012 on AFC North Report:
Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur has stated that quarterback Brandon Weeden will not play in the final preseason game against the Chicago Bears. The reason is simple--Weeden is "very ready"--well, that's not the total story. Shurmur has been getting a lot of criticism for not playing Weeden although it is considered a standard procedure in the NFL to rest your starters in the final preseason game--thus eliminating injuries. But is this a good decision by a coach who went 4-12 last season and who's head could be on the "chopping block" now that the Browns have a new owner?

Shurmurs statement that Weeden is "very ready" opens the door for numerous questions, my favorite being "has he (Shurmur) been watching the games" because if he had it would be hard to determine that Weeden and the 1st string offense is ready for much of anything. Did he watch the "train wreck" performance in the opening quarter of the Eagles game? Yea, it is preseason and stats mean little, but really--24 of 49, 49% for 297 yards with no touchdowns and one interception? How about sacked four times with three fumbles--these are the stats for three exhibition games and this is "very ready".

But then in Shurmurs defence one doesn't risk injury to their starting quarterback in such a meaningless game, especially when that quarterback is "very ready". Such a move is reserved for quarterbacks who are not ready, need the experience and have a coach that is in "learning mode" also. Somewhat like Tom Coughlin playing Eli Manning last night (that would be the Eli with two Super Bowl rings)!

Shurmur: Brandon Weeden is “Very Ready”

I think [Brandon Weeden] is very prepared. I think he’s had an outstanding camp. I thought he had an outstanding offseason. Really he’s kind of improved every day. For a guy that’s going through this for the first time as a pro, I think he’s very ready. – Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, Tuesday, after announcing that Weeden would not be suiting up for the team’s...

Overview of Cleveland Browns Quarterback Brandon Weeden's Training Camp

It has been pretty clear since training camp started that Brandon Weeden was the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback. Despite Pat Shurmur saying it was a competition with Colt McCoy, it was ended quickly by Brandon Weeden’s performance in camp. When I watched the first padded practice for the Browns, it was easy to see that Brandon Weeden's physical ability gives the Browns...

Weeden sitting is the safe play, I guess

Pat Shurmur announced today that Brandon Weeden was going to sit out the fourth pre-season game this week. It has created debate all over sports talk radio and twitter as people try to figure out what their stance is on the topic. On the one hand, Brandon Weeden and the starting offense might want to have something in their memories that’s a bit more positive than what they did...

Cancel the Season: Brandon Weeden to sit out Browns’ last practice game

On one hand, no one will ever go broke questioning the legitimacy and competence of the Holmgren/Shurmur regime. It’s easy enough to see pretty much any decision they make as resulting primarily from some combination of arrogance and fear, including the one to sit Brandon Weeden in tonight’s final preseason tuneup. Of course they don’t want anyone to get hurt tonight, but worse...

Browns Q.B. Brandon Weeden Must Be More Ready Than Eli Manning, Manning’s Playing Tonight

Browns coach Pat Shurmur has been reiterating for the past couple days, just how ready his 28-year-old rookie Q.B. Brandon Weeden is. I find it a bit unusual that Weeden himself has stated he needs more time to get comfortable with the speed of the game in the NFL. The other thing I find a bit unusual is the fact a guy like Eli Manning is playing for the New York Giants tonight in...

Browns News: Trent Richardson Still Not At Practice; Weeden to Sit Out Game

The twitter brigade in Berea kept us informed today that rookie RB Trent Richardson was not on the practice field again, and that QB Brandon Weeden isn’t expected to play at all on Thursday. Still no Trent Richardson for #Browns. Expected him on field by this point this week. I’m sure we’ll get the usual “he’s making progress.” — Tom Withers (@twithersAP) August 28...

What We’re Watching: Bears at Browns

No Brandon Weeden and potentially no fans inside of the stadium despite being forced to pay regular season prices, but that won’t stop us from analyzing the game from the comfort of our own homes. The home stretch before the start of the regular season, the Browns will be forced to use tonight’s contest to widdle their roster from 75 to 53 by the close of business tomorrow. You...

Why Brandon Weeden will be the best rookie quarterback in 2012

I have evaluated all the quarterback situations around the league and I have made my final conclusion.  That is that, Brandon Weeden will perform better than any rookie quarterback in the NFL Draft.  I know everyone is wondering about Robert Griffin III or Andrew Luck, but I think Weeden can be the best. Weeden is far more mature then all of these quarterbacks, he understands the...

If Browns Brandon Weeden Wasn’t Going To Have Enough Trouble With Eagles Defense Now They Got David Sims

The Cleveland Browns just made Brandon Weeden’s rookie start in the NFL for the regular season a bit tougher. They traded safety David Sims to the Eagles for an undisclosed draft pick in 2013. Sims was the stand out defensive player for the Browns this preseason. Sims did an outstanding job playing against the pass. He intercepted 2 passes, one against the Detroit Lions and one...

Browns Q.B. Colt McCoy Gets Start Against Bears Weeden Won’t Play

Browns quarterback Cot McCoy will start Thursday night when the Browns take on the Chicago Bears, Brandon Weeden will not play. Just recently Pat Shurmur said he has a lot of confidence in McCoy, you just have to wonder if the Cleveland Browns have wondered if they named Brandon Weeden the Browns starting quarterback prematurely. McCoy has had better than Weeden throughout the preseason...

Browns Joe Thomas & Pat Shurmur See strength Up front For Weeden’s Sake Lets Hope They Start Showing The Rest Of Us

Both Joe Thomas and head coach Pat Shurmur are insisting the Cleveland Browns offensive line is going to be good this season. They both see this as being the teams strength coming into the season. I wonder what they are seeing that the rest of us missed last Friday night? The Eagles were able to walk through the holes in the O-line to get to Brandon Weeden, forcing him to fumble...

Colt McCoy to start for Browns on Thursday

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur has announced that rookie Brandon Weeden will sit on Thursday, giving the nod for the final preseason game to Colt McCoy. The Browns announced weeks ago that Weeden was the starter, and typically starting quarterbacks sit out the final preseason game. But Weeden isn’t your typical starter. He’s struggled the past two preseason games and...

Browns QB Colt McCoy To Start Vs Bears, QB Brandon Weeden To Sit

Starting quarterback Brandon Weeden won’t play in the Browns’ preseason finale Thursday night against the Chicago Bears, coach Pat Shurmur said this afternoon during his post-practice news conference. Colt McCoy will start, and fellow quarterbacks Seneca Wallace and Thaddeus Lewis also will play, Shurmur said. The competition between McCoy and Wallace for the No. 2 quarterback...

Some surprises in the Cleveland Browns final cut list. Some fans are shocked.

Anytime a team faces that final cut-down to the 53 man roster there are some very difficult decisions to be made. In some cases many of the releases made by the 32 NFL teams are not surprising, but sometimes they are downright shocking. For the Cleveland Browns there are a few shockers to hit the wire on Friday. QB Seneca Wallace: Since Brandon Weeden was drafted...

What to Expect from the Browns Offense

After 3 preseason games the Cleveland Browns sit at 2-1, and what does that mean? Absolutely nothing! Preseason games are where teams practice situational scenarios that they’ve worked on in practice. This allows them to implement exactly what they practiced for weeks in actual game action. So what should you expect from a preseason game? You want to see your team have continued...
