Browns have no new player positive COVID-19 cases; game on vs. Steelers

The Cleveland Browns received some much-needed good news heading into their Sunday night wild-card postseason game at the Pittsburgh Steelers.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Friday that the Browns have recorded no new positive COVID-19 test results among players. Cleveland's facility remained closed through early Friday afternoon, but it's hoped that players will be able to conduct their first practice of the week either later in the afternoon or at some point Saturday morning.

The Browns were first burdened by their current coronavirus-related issues on Dec. 26, one day before they fell to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. As of the posting of this piece, starting safety Ronnie Harrison, linebacker Malcolm Smith, tight end Harrison Bryant, cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson, Pro Bowl left guard Joel Bitonio, and wide receiver KhaDarel Hodge were all still on the reserve COVID-19 list.

It's been widely reported that Harrison, Bitonio and Hodge all tested positive for the coronavirus and won't be available through the weekend. Ward, Smith and Bryant reportedly tested positive last week, and it's unknown if they will play at Pittsburgh. Anybody added to the reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday or Saturday won't be cleared by Sunday evening.

Eyes were raised on Thursday when NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported that the virus had spread among Cleveland players.

Concerns that the Browns may be dealing with an outbreak are subsiding, however, and the final wild-card contest of the weekend is still scheduled to occur on Sunday night.

Cleveland will be without head coach Kevin Stefanski and two of his assistants, as all three tested positive for the virus earlier this week. Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer will serve as interim coach in Stefanski's absence.
