BEREA Despite the Browns being winless in two games, team captain DQwell Jackson is off to arguably the best start of his seventh NFL season. He had a career best three sacks against the Bengals, three QB hurries, two tackles for loss, as well as an interception. Jackson has an interception in each game, as well as a fumble recovery to go with his eight tackles. Jackson didnt know if having his best start was true or not, but he was quick to pass around the credit. Its hard to say when youre not winning, he said. Im more comfortable the second time around (in the 4-3). A large part of my success thus far has been the D-line. Jackson said the Browns still have plenty of time to turn things around. Its not over, he said. We have a lot of football to play. The Browns will host the Bills, who are coming to Cleveland after a big win. Were back at home, Jackson said. Both of our games (have been) close. If we can get over that hump, we can string some wins together. Jackson said the defense has to play better, particularly on third down. As a defense, we have to do a better job of getting off the field, he said. We need to stay positive. We definitely had a lot of opportunities to get the ball back. Jackson said that the secondary definitely missed Joe Haden, but hes confident the young players will step it up. We have guys who can get it done, Jackson said. But (Joes) a great player and you do miss him. Notebook Must Win: Shurmur didnt want to over emphasize this weeks game with the Bills, but knows the importance of needing a win as teams that start the season 0-3, historically, have little chance to make the playoffs. He said he didnt like taking statistics at Michigan State, but knows the importance of this game. We need to do what we can to win this football game, he said. I have a big respect for Buffalo coming off a big victory. Theyve upgraded their roster a lot. Bad Call: LB DQwell Jackson said that the penalty he was called for grabbing TE Jermaine Gresham was within the rules and the way hes played since hes been in the NFL. I played the way I have for seven years within the rules, Jackson said. I took the tight end out of the equation. At the end of the game, we agreed to disagree (with the official). Pass Rush: One of the bright spots coming out of the first two games has been the pressure the defense has put on the quarterbacks. After two sacks against QB Michael Vick in the opener, the Browns sacked QB Andy Dalton six times. It starts with the talent of the guys doing the rushing, Shurmur said. At least in my time here, weve upgraded our talent at the position. Weve had a good rotation and guys are fresh. Jackson said the guys up front have been key in the pressure. I have to give our D-line a lot of credit, Jackson said. They have given us a good push that has contributed to the sacks and turnovers. Jackson had three sacks against the Bengals and an interception. The other sacks were credited to DL John Hughes, DL Juqua Parker and DL Frostee Rucker. Injury Update: There were no updates on players who left the Bengals game. DL Juqua Parker (ankle), DL Billy Winn (head) and TE Alex Smith (head) all left the game. They will be updated on Wednesday when the team injury report is submitted to the NFL. DB Sheldon Brown played one play against the Bengals to keep his streak alive at 162 games, but was held out the rest of the game. He was limited throughout the week, Shurmur said. Ive been with Sheldon for a long time and am a big Sheldon Brown fan and he was banged up throughout the week last week. Shurmur sounded optimistic that he would be able to resume his starting role this week. I think youll see him in there. Shurmur said he thinks Brown would rather get a win than to keep his streak alive. I think its important to him, he said. If you ask an unselfish guy like Sheldon, hed give up a streak for a victory. Young Guns: With DB Joe Haden and DB Sheldon Brown out, DB Buster Skrine and DB Trevin Wade were forced into much more action than usual. Both players struggled with big plays. Shurmur was asked if any changes would be made at cornerback. Were going to look at everything to make this team better, Shurmur said. Shurmur said that Skrine slipped on the turf on a couple of plays. When I watched the game, I fly through it pretty quick on the plane coming home, he said. I think there was some (slipping) going on. Shurmur said he thinks all of the cornerbacks on the roster can play the outside and some can play the slot. When you draft, you take corners who can play outside and then you work them from there, he said. With Joe out, well look at all options.

Browns DB Sheldon Brown was Active to Keep Streak Alive

Cleveland Browns veteran cornerback Sheldon Brown was active on Sunday, playing one play, which kept his consecutive games played streak in tact at 162. Missing most of the week’s practices due to a shoulder injury, Brown did not start in Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals; second-year cornerback Buster Skrine drew coverage opposite of Dimitiri Patterson. Taking up one...

Despite improved offense, Browns lose to Bengals 34-27

The Browns ran into a Bengals team with some good offensive playmakers, and ultimately couldn’t stay out of their own way to win it. The three big storylines of the Browns game today will be special teams, replacement defensive backs and penalties even though it could have been Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson. Unfortunately, the Browns weren’t able to overcome their mistakes...

Browns secondary can't stop Bengals

CINCINNATI -- The Cleveland Browns had a good defensive game in the opener -- and lost. Then they had a good offensive game in the second week -- and lost. Which brings up the question: Is a loss easier to take when the losing team looks good? Or are the Browns, at this point of a season, playing just well enough to lose? Sunday in Cincinnati, the Browns got record-breaking rookie...

Browns’ Young Secondary Still Has Potential Despite Rough Day

There’s no other way to say it than to say that the young guys were overwhelmed yesterday. Trevin Wade got torched. Buster Skrine seemed overmatched and chasing. Eric Hagg played pedestrian when he wasn’t giving up his own touchdown. Look, it’s difficult to lose your top two cornerbacks in between week one and week two of an NFL season. No matter how much planning you do to...

Spiller, who brings an average of over 10 yards per carry (29 carries, 292 yards) into the game, and take their chances with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills needed...

Browns To Start Skrine, Patterson At Corner; Week 2 Inactives Announced

The Browns released their inactive list for this afternoon’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Paul Brown Stadium. Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, running back Brandon Jackson, wide receiver Jordan Norwood, offensive lineman Oniel Cousins, linebackers James-Michael Johnson and Tank Carder, and safety and special teamer Ray Ventrone will not be on the active roster today. It appears...

The Cleveland Browns: Ten observations from the Browns vs Bengals game

Brandon Weeden played like a 28 year old 1st round draft pick, and that’s a compliment. He broke rookie QB passing records, and that list includes Bernie Kosar, Brian Sipe, Otto Graham and Eric Zeier to bring the list and the accomplishment back to reality. I was one of the biggest screamers that if he did not improve he would have to get yanked by week 6.  After a 26-37...

Browns' rushing game gaining traction

BEREA It is not surprising that the highest ranked unit for the Browns comes with the emergence of the teams top draft pick. After last weeks 130-yard rushing performance against the Bengals, the Browns are ranked 7th in the AFC and tied for 11th overall in the NFL, with the Panthers. Trent Richardson rushed for 109 yards on 19 carries for a lofty 5.7 average and a touchdown. He...

Dalton throws 3 TDs, Bengals beat Browns 34-27

Not even a breakout game by Cleveland's rookie playmakers could change the outcome of Ohio's intrastate series. Adam ''Pacman'' Jones returned Cleveland's first punt 81 yards for a touchdown Sunday, and Andy Dalton matched his career high with three touchdown passes, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 34-27 victory in their one-sided rivalry. The Bengals...

LB Scott Fujita playing for Browns vs Bengals

Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita is playing for the first time since his three-game bounty suspension was temporarily overturned on appeal. Fujita practiced last week, showing he was recovered from a leg injury in training camp. He sat out an opening loss to the Eagles. The Browns are short-handed at cornerback against the Bengals on Sunday. Joe Haden is serving the first...

Dalton's 3 TDs lead Bengals over Browns

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Not even a breakout game by Cleveland's rookie playmakers could change the outcome of Ohio's intrastate series. Adam "Pacman" Jones returned Cleveland's first punt 81 yards for a touchdown Sunday, and Andy Dalton matched his career high with three touchdown passes, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 34-27 victory in their one-sided rivalry...

First and 10: Some positives to an 0-2 team

1) There are times when I look back and think I might have been too hard on a team. Sunday seemed like a game the Browns could have won -- had they had a secondary. But perhaps in the weariness of watching the Browns lose -- Josh Cribbs phrased it losing and sucking on Twitter -- the half-empty side took over. So lets go to the half-full side: That was as good an offensive one-two...

Browns Have A Huge Problem Vs The Buffalo Bills It’s C.J. Spiller. Can Cleveland Avoid 0-3 ?

The Cleveland Browns are the only team in the AFC Central not to win a game yet. The Browns take on the Buffalo Bills in week 3 and this game doesn’t look like the push-over fans were hoping for. Yes the Browns had a much improved offense in Cincinnati, the Bengals defense isn’t ranked as good as the Bills. Not only will Cleveland be facing a tougher defense, the Browns have...

Week 2 has arrived and the picks are in, Matt, Dave and Jeremy have jumped out to an early lead, but how long will they stay on top. Here are the games we’ll be picking for this week. Five Keys: Week Two Postmortem

Well, despite the ongoing defensive deficiencies (and boy are there), the Bengals did manage to win the game on Sunday, and that feels a heck of a lot better than last week. Still, there are glaring problems on the defense.  Ironically, the defense was supposed to carry the offense, but Sunday it was the offense staying working hard to stay one step ahead because the defense was...
