Getty It’s starting to sound like Browns head coach Pat Shurmur might be leaning towards keeping quarterback Colt McCoy around as Brandon Weeden’s back up this season. “I think he’s done an outstanding job here in training camp,” said Shurmur. “I’m very pleased with where he’s at. I gained an even greater appreciation of him, the way he’s competed, the way he’s handled the situation, let’s just call it that. I’m very impressed with how he’s doing. I think that’s good for our team. He understands one of the primary things you need to understand as a backup at this point — to be ready to play — because you’re ankle injury from being in there, and he’s been on both sides of that coin and so he understands it.” Shurmur seems happy with what he’s seen from McCoy over the course of the offseason. “He’s had a full year now –  a season and a full offseason to get to know our system better and I think it’s showing up that way,” said Shurmur. ” so I’ve got a great

Did the Browns give up on Colt McCoy too soon?

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur made a bold decision early in the preseason when he named rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden the starter before taking a single snap in an NFL game.  After three preseason starts, Weeden has looked like a rookie; inexperienced and unable to move the offense consistently while last year’s starter, Colt [...]

Colt McCoy to start for Browns on Thursday

Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur has announced that rookie Brandon Weeden will sit on Thursday, giving the nod for the final preseason game to Colt McCoy. The Browns announced weeks ago that Weeden was the starter, and typically starting quarterbacks sit out the final preseason game. But Weeden isn’t your typical starter. He’s struggled the past two preseason games and...

Cleveland Brown’s Pat Shurmur: A tale of two coaches

Pat Shurmur walked into quite the situation when being hand-picked by team president Mike Holmgren to coach the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2011 season. Since their return to the NFL in 1999, the Browns have been through six head coaches in that 13 year time period with very little success. Every single move Shurmur made would be critiqued to an almost unnecessary degree by media...

Shurmur: Brandon Weeden is “Very Ready”

I think [Brandon Weeden] is very prepared. I think he’s had an outstanding camp. I thought he had an outstanding offseason. Really he’s kind of improved every day. For a guy that’s going through this for the first time as a pro, I think he’s very ready. – Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, Tuesday, after announcing that Weeden would not be suiting up for the team’s...

Weeden sitting is the safe play, I guess

Pat Shurmur announced today that Brandon Weeden was going to sit out the fourth pre-season game this week. It has created debate all over sports talk radio and twitter as people try to figure out what their stance is on the topic. On the one hand, Brandon Weeden and the starting offense might want to have something in their memories that’s a bit more positive than what they did...

Shurmur says Hardesty was not demoted

There was some speculation that Cleveland Browns running back Montario Hardesty was demoted after not taking part in practice yesterday. He’s fumbled in both of the last two games and some thought head coach Pat Shurmur was sending him a message by not letting him practice. Well Shurmur put all of that to rest today. “No, not at all,” said Shurmur. “He’s just sore from...

Browns optimistic on Richardson for opener

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -- Browns coach Pat Shurmur is "very optimistic" rookie running back Trent Richardson will play in the season opener on Sept. 9 against Philadelphia. The No. 3 overall pick in April's NFL draft, Richardson has been sidelined since undergoing left knee surgery on Aug. 9. The former Alabama star has yet to play in any of Cleveland's exhibition games...

Browns QB Weeden to sit out Bears game

Browns rookie starting quarterback Brandon Weeden will sit out Cleveland's preseason finale against Chicago. Coach Pat Shurmur said after Tuesday's practice that Weeden, who did not throw a touchdown pass in three starts, will not play and Colt McCoy will start against the Bears on Thursday night.
