Browns obvious kryptonite was what ended their season
Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

During the season that just ended for the Cleveland Browns, they were one of the best teams at home in the entire NFL.

Their lone loss at home was in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens and it was the first career start for Dorian Thompson-Robinson under center.

Cleveland’s season was a different story on the road, where they struggled to play and won just a few games all season. The Browns were 3-5 on the road this season and that includes the playoff loss in Houston to the Texans.

Offensively, the Browns were comparative at home and on the road. They scored just six more points at home than they did on the road.

It is the defense that suffered from the road woes. Jim Schwartz’s unit was one of the best defenses in recent memory in the NFL but only when they played at home. In Cleveland Browns Stadium, the home team surrendered just 13.9 points per game.

A different story on the road for the defense, as they got burnt for 29.6 points a game when traveling. Cleveland’s defense gave up more than double the points when away, rather than at home.

The season ended with a sting of 45 points given up against rookie QB C.J. Stroud and the Texans. That kind of defensive showing is a tough pill to swallow and have in the back of your mom throughout the offseason.

Overall, the Browns’ defense took a huge step in 2023 under Schwartz. It was a night and day different unit than last year. The group is going to have to find out how to travel in 2024 for Cleveland to reach their goals.
