Browns Sign QB Jeff Driskel Off Cardinals Practice Squad

One day after locking up a playoff berth following a 37-20 win over the Jets, the Browns brass was back to making tweaks to the roster.

Less than a week removed from the team placing rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the IR, Cleveland has added another QB to the roster, signing eight-year veteran Jeff Driskel off the Cardinals practice squad to bring their quarterback room back to three players.

Driskel has spent the majority of the 2023 season on Arizona's practice squad. He had previous stints with the Bengals, Lions, Broncos and Texans, starting 11 total games over the course of his career, most of which came with Cincinnati in 2018.

Driskel most recently started two games for Houston in 2022, throwing for 108 yards and one touchdown. He joined the Cardinals as a potential candidate to start while Kyler Murray recovered from a torn ACL but saw that put to bed when the team acquired Josh Dobbs from the Browns in the final week of the preseason.

Now Driskel comes to Cleveland to join a quarterback room headlined by Comeback Player of the Year Candidate, Joe Flacco and former XFLer P.J. Walker. With the Browns clinching a playoff berth on Thursday and locked into at least the top wild card spot in the AFC regardless of what happens the rest of the season, there's a chance he could see some action almost immediately in Week 18.

If Baltimore beats the Dolphins this weekend, the Browns would no longer be in the running for the AFC North and the top seed in the conference. If that's the scenario they're faced with heading into their regular season finale, Driskel could serve as the primary backup to Walker, if head coach Kevin Stefanski chooses to rest a number of key starters, like Flacco.
