Bruce Arians knows quarterbacks. He was Peyton Manning's first quarterback coach in Indianapolis, groomed Tim Couch in Cleveland before Couch was injured and turned a raw Ben Roethlisberger into a two time Super Bowl winner.

Now Arians has a new challenge in grooming another first round quarterback in Andrew Luck. With the Colts made over roster, the task before Arians will be more like he had with the expansion Browns than what he inherited in Pittsburgh.

To this point, Arians is very pleased with the development of his young offense. Luck is obviously the special quarterback that everyone thought he would be. The question this season is how much support he'll get from the other young players around him.

Arians likes the package of backs he has and what each one can bring to the table. Donald Brown and Mwelde Moore, who Arians brought over from Pittsburgh, are the favorites to see time as "every down" backs while Delone Carter has been effective in short yardage situations. Rookie Vick Ballard and second year player Darren Evans will compete for situational duties.

The receiving corps is anchored by veterans Reggie Wayne and Austin Collie, but the draft choices, LaVon Brazill and TY Hilton have been very impressive. Undrafted free agent Kris Adams is also making a serious case to be part of the final roster. Add to that veteran free agent Donnie Avery, who's been hurt much of camp, and Luck has a good stable of targets to throw to.

Arians told reporters that he expects to use all of these receivers liberally in preseason, despite their inexperience:

"These guys bring speed and the ability to run after the catch… if they're dressed we'll have a package for them."

Arians' offenses in Pittsburgh were famous for their versatile use of tight ends. To that end, Arians has hit the jackpot with Coby Fleener and Dwayne Allen.

Another trademark of Arians' offenses in Cleveland and Pittsburgh was his development of backup quarterbacks. Both the Browns and the Steelers used their backup quarterbacks significantly during playoff runs when the starters went down. Arians said that having a good backup quarterback is an absolute must in today's NFL:

"You gotta have one that you trust and can play. Your whole franchise rides on it."

Colts fans know only too well the price the franchise paid for not having a capable backup to Peyton Manning. Arians is quite happy with what Drew Stanton and Chandler Harnish have shown him thus far.

Arians expects Andrew Luck to play about 20 to 25 snaps in Sundays preseason opener against the Rams. Getting Luck and the first team offense snaps together will be paramount during the preseason.

For Andrew Luck and the rest of the Colts offense, the month of August will be full of things they've never before experienced. They're very fortunate to have Bruce Arians around to help them through it. He's seen all this before.
