Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips confirms that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have expressed interest in interviewing him for their vacant head coaching job. "Actually they asked last week for permission," said Phillips when contacted on Sunday. "The club gave them permission after I told them that, yes, I would be interested in talking to them." The Bucs are looking for a replacement for the fired Raheem Morris. Phillips has been open about his desire to become a head coach again and as recently as last week said that he believes his record as a head coach ranks with any of the candidates that interviewing for open jobs. "Gary (Kubiak) and Mr. McNair know that I'm happy here and don't really want to leave here," Phillips said. "But if there's something special for me that I could work out, I'd be interested." Phillips said he isn't yet familiar enough with the Bucs organization to determine if he would make a good fit. "Not enough, no," said Phillips. "I think that's part of the process... them getting to know me and me doing the interview. Having been a head coach, there's things that I know that I would like. If all those things are in place, then certainly I'd be very interested. If they aren't then I wouldn't be interested." Phillips turned what was arguably the worst defense in the NFL in 2010 into the second ranked unit in the league this year in terms of yards allowed per game. The Texans are allowing 17.4 points per game, fourth best in the NFL. Phillips has been a head coach with the Saints, Broncos, Bills, Falcons and the Cowboys. He is 82-61 as a head coach in the NFL, including a 1-5 record in the postseason.
