Jerramy Stevens NFL career could be over.

In case you missed it, on Saturday evening Buccaneers Tight End Jerramy Stevens was arrested for possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia. The former two are felonies. Stevens, who is 30 and backs up Kellen Winslow, has had a spate of off-the-field issues in the past and would likely be facing an NFL-sanctioned suspension for this latest gaffe.

The Bucs didn’t wait around for the NFL to decide on that though. They moved quickly this morning and cut Stevens. He was already held out of Sunday’s games for obvious reasons but clearly this isn’t the type of individual you want on the team.

Now while I doubt that Stevens was truly intent on selling some pot as is alleged, the fact he was out on Saturday evening with at least an ounce of the stuff and the means to smoke it is completely unacceptable. Talk about a lack of commitment to your team, if he’s out the night before a big home game getting high he’s not the type of player the Bucs need to have in the locker-room.

Already once this year the Bucs have had to deal with losing a player to a drug-related suspension when Tanard Jackson was suspended for the season several weeks ago. In my opinion he should have been out too, but Raheem Morris has chosen to take a more reconciliatory approach with him. He’s not going to make that mistake with Stevens. He acted like an idiot in his time in Seattle, and clearly at 30 years old he hasn’t changed in Tampa either.

The Bucs can find another option to back up Winslow, Steven had three catches all season and is used more as a blocker (which we all know the blocking has been stellar thus far). Already TE Ryan Purvis has been elevated from the practice squad. Raheem Morris had a big decision to make today, and he decided correctly. The Bucs don’t need a player like Jerramy Stevens.
