Bucs Sign 2 To Roster, Move 2 Players To IR
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

The Bucs were busy on Wednesday morning making a flurry of roster moves.

According to the Athletic’s Greg Auman, Tampa Bay has placed running back Giovani Bernard and offensive tackle Josh Wells on injured reserve. In a corresponding move, the team has signed wide receiver Kaylon Geiger and linebacker Kenny Young from the practice squad to the active roster.

In addition to those moves, as reported on Tuesday, Cole Beasley has officially signed to the practice squad, along with former 49ers tackle Justin Skule.

Wells has been the Bucs’ top reserve at tackle since 2019. He was filling in for the injured Donovan Smith in Sunday’s game when he suffered a calf injury. Brandon Walton stepped in for the rest of the contest. Bernard was sidelined with an ankle injury, which he suffered on a kick return on special teams against the Saints. Both players will be eligible to come off of injured reserve in four weeks, which would make them available for the team’s away game versus the Steelers.

Geiger and Young were both elevated from the practice squad ahead of the Bucs victory over the Saints. For Geiger it was his first career NFL game after signing with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent in the offseason. He had just one snap on offense but logged seven snaps on special teams.

Young was signed by the Bucs practice squad on September 5, and played a significant role on special teams tallying 17 snaps in the game. He has 25 career starts and will provide veteran depth at the inside linebacker position as well as play a role on special teams units.

New Additions To Bucs Roster

Beasley will start off on the Bucs practice squad with the expectation he will be signed to the active roster sooner rather than later. He turned down more lucrative deals from other teams to sign with Tampa Bay and play for Tom Brady.

Beasley has had solid production over his 10-year career, most recently in Buffalo. He logged back-to-back 82 reception seasons in 2020 and 2021. And more importantly, Beasley had just five drops over that span.

The addition of Skule to the practice squad gives the Bucs a veteran offensive tackle with starting experience. Having started 12 games with the 49ers he can play both tackle spots and provides added insurance if Smith cannot go on Sunday gains the Packers. Both Beasley and Skule are likely to be elevated this weekend.
