The Buffalo Bills squandered two chances at the end of the first half that proved to be the difference maker in their 7-6 loss to the Washington Redskins Thursday.

Buffalo had a golden opportunity, down 7-3, to score a touchdown as they were inside the Washington five yard line as the first half was coming to a close. The Bills couldn't find the endzone, and Rian Lindell missed a chip-shot field goal. On the following drive for Washington, the Bills came up with an opportunistic interception at midfield. That opportunity was quickly seized when Tyler Thigpen under-threw TJ Graham, who was streaking down the sideline. The pass was intercepted and the half ended 7-3. The Bills would add a field goal in the second half, but were unable to get anymore points and the Bills fell to 0-1 on the preseason.

Ryan Fitzpatrick went 6-for-14 for 61 yards and TJ Graham led all Bills receivers with 3 catches for 37 yards. Thigpen was Buffalo's second quarterback and Vince Young played most of the second half. Brad Smith came in late in the fourth quarter to finish the game at quarterback.

While the Bills have a clear No. 1 quarterback in Fitzpatrick, the No. 2 position seems to be up for grabs. Both Thigpen and Young played erratically at times and neither one was able to make a solid case for the backup position.

The Bills earned a total of 12 first downs and went 4-for-16 on third down. They also committed 14 penalties proving that the team needs work during the preseason before the games start counting for real.

The Bills will be in action next when they travel to Minnesota Friday to take on the Vikings. Kickoff for that game will be at 8 pm.
