According to the Daily News today, Cotchery’s dismissal from the Jets was a long time in the making, and at his own request.
The Daily News has learned that Cotchery asked for a trade in February before the NFL Scouting Combine, hoping to land on a team that would A) allow him to start and B) extend his contract.
Just prior to the 2009 Draft, I had the pleasure to speak with Jerricho Cotchery, and in our interview, Cotchery made it known that he wanted the Jets to add a receiver to play across from him. He was proud and cocksure that he was a starter in the NFL, but also humble enough to know that he needed some help to execute. Since then, the Jets drafted Sanchez, and then added Edwards that fall. I remember thinking about how Edwards would help Cotchery’s production and how happy he must be. Then the next spring … they added Santonio … what a change in his fortunes just a few months.
The moves the Jets made this spring now make a little more sense.&...
